Established in 1802, d'Ouwe Werf is South Africa's oldest and most historic hotel and has defined hospitality and fine dining for centuries. Our guests enjoy the wonders of the Cape Winelands from the repose of our luxurious accommodation, situated in the historical core of the university town of Stellenbosch, only 45km from Cape Town, 20km from the sea and surrounded by beautiful mountains. Stellenbosch is famous as the premier wine region of South Africa.

Located on tranquil Church Street, d'Ouwe Werf retains the graceful ambience of Georgian style throughout. Soft hues and antique furniture have been tastefully aligned with the comforts of modern living to create a calm haven from which to base your explorations of Stellenbosch.

The inn consists of 32 en suite bedrooms, which are individually styled with antiques collected over the years. Modern facilities, and staff who pride themselves on their friendly, personal and professional service, make each visit an enjoyable and memorable one.

The "1802 Restaurant" is renowned for its traditional and international cuisine and boasts a wine list that will satisfy even the most sophisticated connoisseur. On sunny days, sit outside in the vine-covered coffee garden, and enjoy a slice of cheesecake which would be the best you have ever tasted.

Enjoy a dip in the heated swimming pool. And for all those who feel a bit more energetic, there are signature golf courses in close proximity to the town, guided historical village walks, wine tours and a variety of other activities that could be arranged from the hotel. A myriad shops, museums, art galleries and beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture are within easy walking distance of the hotel.

d'Ouwe Werf has a total of 38 rooms comprising 32 en suite bedrooms and 6 apartments. Apartments allow for self catering if desired.All rooms have satellite TV, DSTV, tea & coffee making facilities, air conditioning, bathrobe, bathroom amenities, mineral water, hairdryer, high speed Internet access, safe, telephone, work desk with lamp.Mini bar stocked on request and non smoking rooms are available.

No two rooms are alike and all are beautifully appointed with en suite bathrooms.

These rooms were refurbished in 2006 and are spread over 3 buildings. Furnished in a modern Cape style, these rooms are larger than the others rooms on the Hotel.

governor rooms - 4

Named after the first governors of the Cape, these spacious rooms are all furnished in comfortable modern Cape style. They boast walk-in dressing rooms, large bathrooms and under floor heating. 1 double and 3 twin rooms.

On 2 April 1982, the well-known d'Ouwe Werf restaurant was opened. This Restaurant is regarded as one of the culinary landmarks in Stellenbosch. For decades the restaurant was renowned as the best in town. To maintain the reputation and in keeping with the vastly improved levels in the hotel, the restaurant (now called 1802 @ d'Ouwe Werf) was completely renovated during 2003-2006. The Executive Chef has again positioned the restaurant as a leading light in Stellenbosch. The Hotel has always striven to present a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere in the restaurant for the benefit of our many regular guests. It aims to maintain an unhurried pace so that guests would never feel pressurised. In addition to the extensive traditional menu, a variety of lighter dishes are available, including Continental cuisine.

Breakfast at d'Ouwe Werf consists of a selection of cereals, fruits, juices, yogurts, cold meats, cheeses, muffins, toast , followed by a choice of warm dishes. Tea & filter coffee are of course available.

During the winter months, the fireplace keeps guests snug while the air-conditioning, not to mention the magnificent vine-covered courtyard where most tables are situated, provides a welcome respite from the African sun in summer. Our extensive Stellenbosch wine-of-origin list makes it possible for the 1802 Restaurant to be one of the best places where one can enjoy some of the finest wine this area has to offer.

Directions

Directions from the Airport via the N2 to the hotel A few hundred meters after exiting the airport, follow the signs leading to the N2 motorway east to Somerset West. After some 13km on the N2, turn left at the signposted Helderberg/Baden Powell Drive/R310 turn-off (exit 33) in the direction of Stellenbosch, which is signposted at the top of the turn-off. Follow the R310 for 15km to the T-junction, having passed some wine estates and the Van Rhyn Brandy Cellar on the way. At the T-junction, turn right to Stellenbosch. Continue on this road past the first set of traffic lights, until the second set of traffic lights. Turn right here into Dorp Street. Follow Dorp Street for some 1.5 km past another set of traffic lights and two small traffic roundabouts/circles, signposted as 'mini traffic circles'. Continuing past the second mini circle (signposted as Bird Street), turn left at the third street, which is Drostdy Street. Turn left at the first intersection into Church Street. Our hotel is located at Number 30, which is on the right side about 100metres down. There is a valet parking service available, for which you would first need to announce yourself at the hotel's reception desk. Please note: Street signs in town are on the curb at intersections. Directions from Cape Town City Centre (Adderley Street) to the hotel Follow Adderley street towards the harbour, across two roundabouts / traffic circles and turn right to travel to the N1 motorway. Follow the N1 out of Cape Town until you see the sign marked R304 Stellenbosch/ Klipheuwel and take this turn off to your left. At the following Stop sign, turn right onto the R304. Follow this road until you reach the intersection of the R44 and Bird Street (the R304 changes over to Bird Street once you reach Stellenbosch). Turn right onto the R44 and drive to the fourth traffic light. Take the Dorp Street turn-off to your left and follow for some 1.5 km past another set of traffic lights and two small traffic roundabouts/circles, signposted as 'mini traffic circles'. Continuing past the second mini circle (signposted as Bird Street), turn left at the third street, which is Drostdy Street. Turn left at the first intersection into Church Street.
