Loerie Lodge advice - We try and eliminate breeding places for mosquitoes e.g. blocked gutters, old vehicle tyres, tins and bottles etc. The Municipality sprays our property regularly. And we spray your rooms daily but this is not enough. You can assist.
- Spray behind the curtains under the beds, desks and toilet seat when you go into your room especially just before sunset.
- Apply an insect repellent to exposed skin, especially when one is outside at sunrise or sunset, or at a braai (BBQ)
- Avoid unnecessary excursions to possible breeding places e.g. rivers, dams and long grass etc. especially at night.
- Your rooms have sprays and repellant, as well as a plug in mosquito pad. All these are under your suitcase table. Please switch the pad off in the morning.
- A ceiling fan is in your room and this is a great help if turned on.
- Consideration can be given to the taking of malaria tablets, which are obtainable from all chemists.
- Possible symptoms of malaria at the early stages are similar to flu and progress to severe attacks of “chills and fever?, headaches, muscular pains, joint pains and nausea.
- If in any doubt when feeling under the weather within ten days of your stay – go to a doctor, tell him you were in a Malaria area, and ask for a blood test.
- For employers who have staff in the area, ask about their health condition and that of their families. Please then assist them where you can and pass on as much advice as possible.
- Do not ignore the above, your family might regret it afterwards
- Frogs, lizards, geckos, spiders and bats are a mosquito’s worst enemy; please try not to kill them – if you can!
Safety during your visit We do not hide the truth - You are in Malaria epidemic areas in more places than you are informed. Cars kill there is no repellent against them but you still drive. The symptoms and cure if you know the signs are clear and easy, painless and quick and should not spoil your holiday KEEP COOL AND AVOID HEAT FATIGUE - On exceptionally hot days, at a moderately to high work rate, the body needs 600 ml of water per hour.
- Thirst is an obvious indicator of fluid loss and very yellow urine is an indication of dehydration – coke is not the answer.
- Water has to be taken at regular intervals to assuage thirst. Preferably one cup every 30 minutes.
- Salt tablets are not recommended. Enough salt is taken with meals. The same goes for Champion, which is a salt and sugar solution.
- Vitamin C tablets 0 – 100mg per day can speed up acclimatization for visitors from cooler areas and tourists.
- Your host will provide you with fruit and juices at breakfast and your fridge has a jug of cold orange - these will all help.
- Heat related problems such as Prickly Heat (heat rash), caused by blockage of sweat glands is prevented by good skin hygiene. Avoid strong soaps, which dry the skin and oily creams and lotions, which only increase the blocking effect.
- Heat Collapse and Heat Cramps: This usually happens immediately after a person has stopped work in a hot environment. It is due to re-shunting and pooling of blood in certain parts of the body. The basic cause of this is water loss.
- Heat Stroke: This is the most serious complication and could be fatal if not recognized in time. The condition must be treated early when a person becomes emotionally unstable, irritable and aggressive or apathetic.
- Late signs are a hot and dry skin, muscle twitching, maniacal behavior, hysterical, vacant staring eyes, convulsions, loss of sphincter control and coma.
- First Aid: Cool the person down with fine water spray and a fan. Do not use ice as it constricts the skin blood vessels and reduces heat loss
- Too much alcohol and a subsequent hangover are not advisable in extremely hot weather. Get yourself well before going to work or driving a long distance. Advise your host and ask for help.
FOR YOUR SECURITY - The wearing of excess and expensive jewelry is a temptation for the less privileged.
- Try and dress cool and casually blending your clothing to local conditions.
- Be confident and avoid being isolated alone in crowds. Try and be unpredictable in your movements.
- Use the reflection of shop and car windows to see who is around or following you. Try and avoid queues and crowds.
- Do not obviously show that you either have a mobile phone or a wallet on your person and never take them out and leave them on a table or counter while paying for purchases.
- Keep cameras, binoculars, handbags and luggage locked in the boot of your car. Do not display your mobile phone. Use car parks
- Leave your travel documents, passport and travelers cheques locked up until you need them.
