Mokopane (Potgietersrus) can trace its origins back to 1852 when Voortrekker leader Hendrick Potgieter established a settlement in this pass. Potgietersrus was the largest district in the old Transvaal Province and is by far the largest in the new Northern Province. Potgietersrus has been renamed to Mokopane. This district which extends right up to the Limpopo River on the Botswana border is prime cattle ranching country. The most important crops produced in the area are maize, grain sorghum, sunflower seeds, groundnuts, wheat, cotton, citrus fruit and rice. The warm and well-watered climate helps flowers bloom in abundance and gardens overflow with many coloured bourganvillia, red poinsettias and scented purple jacaranda trees. Tin is mined and coal, platinum, zinc, titanium and vanadium have also been established.
