Verulam is the third oldest town in Kwazulu Natal. It was named after the ancient city of Verulamium, which was established after the Roman invasion of Britian in approximately 43 AD. In 1850 a party of 400 Methodist settlers immigrated to this area from a depressed Britain and founded the attractive town of Verulam. Elegant homesteads, gardens and cemeteries remain as reminders of the days of the first settlement. Verulam is a quaint town nestling amongst undulating hills cascading towards the ocean near Umdloti. Visitors can experience the Verulam Market which, although now housed in a modern structure, encapsulates the cultural atmosphere of shopping in the East. For water sport fanatics, the Hazelmere Dam is an ideal water sport venue.
